Newbury's new brewery and taproom plus Best Beer vote about to close
In which we're a bit jealous of a West Berkshire town. I suppose there's always the Jet Black 1.
From garage to a much bigger garage. Newbury is about to get its own brewery and taproom after planning permission was granted and a crowdfunding campaign bore fruit.
Delphic Brewing Company based in a 320-square-foot double garage in Thatcham is moving to the former Motorist Discount Centres in Mayors Lane, a warehouse space covering 3,192 sq ft.
Reported widely in the Newbury Weekly News, owner and brewer Tom Broadbank is on the move. The man behind the terrific beers like Business As Unusual, Level Crossing and I See Bread People has secured premises and more importantly, permission from the council!
He said: “We're super excited to start work on our new Brewery and Taproom, in the heart of Newbury. We've just had the planning approved, so we're now just waiting on our premises license.
“We'll be upgrading the efficiency of our brewhouse, adding to our fermentation capacity, but remaining small batch; enabling us to continue with plenty of seasonal and one-off brews! The taproom will be open Friday and Saturday to begin with, with plenty of our own beer on tap, as well as some local and national guest beers. We're hoping to have 3 cask ales and 10 keg beers available, as well as local pop-up food vendors.
“The support we received via the crowdfunder was absolutely amazing, Newbury seems buzzing for what we've got planned, and all of the comments of encouragement were so lovely to see! We raised just over £16k to help with the costs of fitting out the taproom, which is incredible, especially given that we had to run it over the Christmas period when people's wallets are stretched already.
“We're aiming for a Spring launch for the new site, and can't wait to see everyone there!”
Last chance to vote for your Best Beer and Brewery of 2023
That’s right, the vote is closing on Sunday night! Midnight. That doesn’t give you long.
Will the Nags Head come second again and preserve the board that means I get at least one WhatsApp message a week about it? Or will there be some new venues, festivals, breweries and beers on the list?
This year there are a few more questions as part of the survey, which is all about highlighting the very best of the Berkshire beer scene in 2023.

Finally..
While I was out of work last year, Mysterious Brewing offered to keep me in beer if I could help them out with a few sales. I didn’t set the world alight, but we did come up with a branded beer concept that allowed us to sell in to local sports clubs.
Over the weekend I was able to drop a first order of Sumas Pilsner into Wokingham & Emmbrook FC. Here it is chilling nicely in the fridge!
